Clubhouse Convos May Day Special — Thought for Your Penny
Clubhouse is the first podcasting platform that listens to you…sorta…
This new format is spawning content that can’t be found anywhere else, each with a different level of interaction. When I called Shoot Your Shot rooms the bottom of the barrel in terms of content, I was expressing my personal content preference.
However as show formats go, it’s the most audience-engaging show format. When I review clubs, I purposely focus on the audience engagement aspect as the heaviest weight in my decision. Although the Good Time Show is well produced content, it’s just a podcast that could exist on any other platform.
Even the Clubhouse Townhall would be graded a C at best. There’s no need to even hold it on Clubhouse — just record it and publish on YouTube so more than 8,000 people can watch it. I gave both Wall Street Daily and News News News an A because they utilize the platform’s full feature set.
As much heat as the NYU Girls get, their show is entirely dependent on audience interaction. Nothing can replace a live studio audience, and the level of engagement goes beyond the stage and platform.
The Laugh Factory Comedy Workshop earned its A+ for providing an essential service for the career of anyone in their industry. If you have no experience and want to become a stand-up comedian, you can do it Clubhouse. And you can just passively listen too. There’s value in seeing behind the scenes of a real-life comedy club.
Clubhouse is an interactive Spotify, and every single user needs to be aware of this. Think about this — nobody ever gets a response from support@joinclubhouse.com. Nobody ever gets a response from suspensions@joinclubhouse.com. Nobody ever gets their issues addressed in the townhall.
Misinformation is being actively spread in rooms. People are actively bullying each other. Misogyny, racism, sexism, antisemitism, anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, and more is alive and well on Clubhouse, and everyone’s being completely ignored…well…not everyone…
Because Paul Davison constantly promotes News News News in townhalls, and Steph Simon admitted in their room this week on how to mod that she speaks to Katherine at News News News one-on-one in private about her show. That’s because it’s the morning news show Paul listens to while living in the white cis male CEO bubble he’s privileged to live in.
People like Amir Yassai fear for their lives because entering any given room could cause them to receive death threats, online trolling, and doxing (which means to have your personal information leaked online to encourage IRL harassment). Us normal people have no voice on Clubhouse.
Meanwhile, News News News advertises itself as a community news program, but not one single user on this entire platform ever takes 3 minutes to tell Paul the morning news about his own platform.
Paul is completely and blissfully unaware of what’s happening on his platform. And everybody flocks to me to put it in my newsletter that I write alone for free. Everybody wants me to spend hours fixing things, so I’m giving you all the solution.
If you’re a Clubhouse user who calls yourself either a journalist or activist and you’re not waking up every morning to ensure Paul gets a 3-minute recap of all the ugly behavior on this platform, you are wrong. Building that 360-feedback loop is the entire community’s responsibility.
I’m just one man with a newsletter, and I’m banned from the News News News rooms. There’s nothing I can do to help you — you have to help yourselves. If you want Paul to listen to you, speak directly to him in the morning news show he listens to.
There’s no reason Paul should be so comfortable he can build a daily routine off our labor while Amir fears for his life. This one’s not on me — it’s on you.
Digital Gentrification
Credit to Nick Kane for the subtitle. In a room discussing Swan Sit and Gary Vee’s tweets about her signing to the Vayner Media talent agency, he coined the term. It was in relation to how content platforms are cleaning up to reach mainstream audiences, something that happens to all platforms. I remember when it happened to YouTube (something that’s still happening).
Sit is the latest agency signing to go public, but she’ll be far from the last. In fact, Vayner Media Advertising VP Anne Flavin joined the room created by Maile Cabral to confirm the company is seeking more creators to support.
This adds to the stories about the NYU Girls signing to WME and the NFL Draft Week coverage (which picked up a LOT of steam as the week continued and word spread).
Clubhouse is acting as a broadcast network for audio. Rooms are becoming studios where live shows are produced daily. Paul wants to see things like a 24/7 news channel. To do that in one club, they’ll need to funnel more people out of smaller rooms and into promoted content.
Users have been screaming for disruptive trolls to be removed from the platform. That gentrification process is coming like a wave, and we’d all do well to follow the lead of those users chosen for the Creator First pilot season.
Those are the chosen ones, and that makes the rest of us freelancers working for ourselves. It’s time to start building our own teams to survive the next evolution of the creator economy.
