Clubhouse Convos April 15 — Thought for Your Penny

Remember when the terms “Soundcloud rapper” and “YouTube rapper” were used as derogatory terms?

They still are in some circles, and the elitism the terms represent aren’t going anywhere anytime soon either. Now we have Clubhouse creators joining the fray as the redheaded stepchildren of the internet. That became immediately clear when reading how The Verge framed Clubhouse and some of its most popular creators.

It paints the picture of a seedy app community filled with shady rooms. If Facebook is Diagon Alley, Clubhouse is painted as Knockturn Alley, where you’re assumed to be guilty of some type of wrongdoing just for showing up. Even its header photo of Leah Lamarr makes her look like she took over for Al Pacino in a gender-bending remake of .

Although Joe Rogan and Eric Weinstein showed Lamarr love on the Spotify’s JRE, it’s unclear how Clubhouse creators will be accepted by mainstream media. We see this happen every time there’s a new platform, as the old guard complains about how the new generation isn’t putting in the work.

Except that’s a narrow view that ignores just how hard Lamarr worked and what she built. She took a chance on a new platform and is an early-moving pioneer. Because of it, she’s going to ultimately win, but she’s taking a lot of hits in the process. This article from The Verge won’t be the last shot fired at Clubhouse creators.

But the Clubhouse culture knows how to shoot its shot, and hopefully some talent will find its way out of the cult before it destroys itself

Future of the Creator Economy

The creator economy is entering a new phase on Clubhouse, and everyone interested in how to build a monetizable community. Actor, musician, and investor Jared Leto joined Patreon CEO Jack Conte and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian to discuss.

Leto kicked the conversation off by explaining his journey in music with his band 30 Seconds to Mars. As he eats breakfast on a hot mic, he explains how difficult it was to make a splash back then.

Ohanian related the experience to the rise of social media and how Reddit was built. He felt alone building a community in a world where audiences ruled the roost. In both cases, it’s the community the men built that ultimately drove their brands with action.

Conte also echoed the thoughts on the difference between broadcasting and community building. He even admits that although they’re using Clubhouse, they’re broadcasting and not allowing a two-way conversation. It’s a refreshing breath of honesty among the nonstop mod circle jerk in the hallways this spring.

The conversation revolves around the concept of community, so let’s dive in.
